The Guitarist's Hand

The Guitarist's HandAnatomy, Technique and Performance

Physiology of guitar practice. Ergonomics, prevention

French Book

To generate sound, guitarists simultaneously use their left hand to modify the vibration length of the strings on the guitar’s neck, and their right hand to make the strings vibrate. The various techniques they must implement to do this are presented here from the angle of the musician’s functional anatomy. This is important, because for every guitarist — whether a virtuoso or a beginner, a professional or an amateur — it is always necessary to reconcile the technical and stylistic requirements of playing, with his/her own physiological demands.

The author, who is a specialized physiotherapist and instructor, provides guitarists with guidelines for understanding and assimilating the anatomical-physiological concepts needed both to develop a risk-free way of handling and playing this demanding instrument, and to prevent any functional problems that might arise. Designed with the assistance of a professional guitarist, the musical exercises are specifically targeted to help the musician develop playing-related sensations and awareness, at first analytically and then in a synchronized manner. They guide and accompany the guitarist through this thorough training course.

Preparation techniques are proposed, first without the instrument before playing, and then with the instrument before and after playing the repertoire. This original method provides guitarists with a useful tool for attaining their operating goals as they seek the best sound.
